Research
In order to accelerate the pace of discovery and maximize outcome, the Lokey Center identified five distinct, yet interconnected, areas that are fundamental to the advancement of the Technion's Life Sciences and Engineering Interdisciplinary Research Center (LS & E):
1. Structural and Systems Biology, Genomics,
Proteomics, and Bioinformatics
2. Tissue Regeneration and Stem Cell Biology
3. Imaging
4. Bioprocesses Engineering
5. Information Processing
"These five clusters will group Technion researchers who will collaborate within the framework of LS&E on unresolved problems in medicine, biology and biotechnology." - Aaron Ciechanover
Objectives
-
Make a significant impact on basic life sciences and engineering research at the Technion, and on applied research in medicine, biology, biotechnology, and environmental sciences in general.
-
Provide a better understanding of life processes that touch on human genetics and the environment.
-
Facilitate the development of new biotechnological products, as well as providing new diagnostic and therapeutic tools.
Process
-
Create the five research clusters.
-
Recruit and establish a strong cadre of young, well-trained scientists.
-
Attract a group of interdisciplinary research students.
-
Bridge biological systems and technology.
-
Involve industry through research activities, patent licensing, student internships, and research grants.
-
Establish state-of-the-art core facilities and infrastructure.
-
Sponsor gifted doctoral and post-doctoral scholars to drive scientific discovery leading to clinical applications.
-
Construct a new Life Sciences building on the Technion campus.
-
Create new academic programs and courses.
-
Foster international collaboration.
